Weather in Spain in September

Is September a good time to visit Spain?

The weather in Spain, especially the south and central areas, is still extremely hot in September, but by mid-month gaps begin to appear between the beach brollies and sunbeds as holiday-makers return home for the start of the new European school year. If you are unencumbered by having to observe school holidays, this is the perfect time to enjoy the Spanish coastal resorts, with the weather still summery and the crowds dissipating. The clock is ticking for sunny Spain, however, so get there soon to make the most of September’s sunshine.

Climate in Spain in September

While northern Europe notes the incursion of autumn, summer lingers in Spain in September. The seasons in the Iberian Peninsula tend to change later, and more suddenly, than in the rest of Europe. Cities in Spain, like Madrid and Seville, are getting back to work after the summer break but remain sultry and hot. Madrid’s average temperature for September is 28°C (maximum) and Seville still swelters with a maximum average of 32°C. Down on the Mediterranean coast super sunny holiday weather still prevails, the Costa de Sol enjoying an average 27°C (Malaga) and the likelihood of rain scant. The northern provinces are cooler and a little more unpredictable as regards wet weather, but it is still a good time to holiday in northern Spain.
