Weather in Maldives in May

Is May a good time to visit the Maldives?

May and June may be the chosen months for weddings in the northern hemisphere, but if you are planning a romantic island beach wedding it is wise not to pick the Maldives in May! This is the wettest month of the year on the islands, when the monsoon rains arrive with a vengeance. Rain can be torrential, generally in short, sharp bursts rather than long rainy days. It can be overcast, though still hot and humid.

Climate in Maldives in May

Contrary to what one might expect, the advent of the rainy season in Maldives during May does not bring a drop in temperatures. The year-round average of 29°C holds true during the May monsoon month, exacerbated by an increase in humidity as the wet season takes hold. More than 200mm of rain can be expected to fall on the islands during May, but this generally comes in short, heavy bursts. There are still plenty of hours of sunshine to be had during the long days – being on the equator the length of daylight hours stays constant year round in Maldives.

What to do in Maldives in May

Many divers and snorkelers maintain they prefer exploring the Maldives coral reefs during the rainy season because of excellent water clarity. Although there may be odd overcast days, and some rain storms, this should not detract from the enjoyment of the many Maldives watersports on offer.

What to pack for a holiday in the Maldives in May

Beachwear is essential for a hot Maldives holiday all year round. When travelling to the Maldives in May don’t think that the rainy season means the sun is less fierce – the sun’s UV rays can be just as lethal under the occasional overcast skies. Sunblock is therefore vital.
